Dr. Ruiz Meets Twentynine Palms USMC Base Command Leadership

Palm Desert, CA – Today, Dr. Raul Ruiz (CA-36) released the following statement after meeting with Major General Lewis A. Craparotta and key leadership at the Marine base in Twentynine Palms.
 
Twentynine Palms USMC Base command leadership briefed Dr. Ruiz on the strategic importance of the Base to U.S. national security objectives and the fight against terrorism. Dr. Ruiz discussed military readiness and the importance of ensuring that service men and women have the resources they need to be fighting ready.
 
“Protecting the safety and security of Americans is my top priority. Our Marines keep our nation safe and train to the highest standards to combat terrorism and any threat they face abroad,”said Dr. Ruiz. “I will continue to fight for military funding and our national security programs that will keep Americans safe. I have the utmost respect for our military personnel and will do all I can to support them and their families.”
 
During the meeting Dr. Ruiz also learned about family readiness initiatives, career resources, housing, natural resources, environmental impacts and energy conservation at the base.
 
Background 
 
As a Member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee Dr. Ruiz is actively working to ensure service members are able to successfully transition to the civilian workforce after they exit the military.
 
Dr. Ruiz has voted consistently to authorize and fund our national defense spending accounts since taking office, including in Fiscal Year (FY) 2016, when all but 41 Democrats opposed the National Defense Reauthorization Act. These bills included:
 
- 2.3% pay increase for troops, above the President’s request of 1.3%
- Funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system
- Prohibiting additional base realignment and closures
 
Dr. Ruiz has supported legislation to protect the U.S. from Cyber Attacks by establishing Cyber and Computer Network Incident Response Teams in each of the 50 states and four US territories under the direction of the National Guard Bureau.
