WASHINGTON, DC – Today Dr. Raul Ruiz (D-Palm Desert) released the following statement regarding the amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations Act by Rep. Steve King that would subject DREAMers to deportation.

“The King Amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations Act is political gamesmanship at its worst and a disgrace to the institution of the United States Congress. This ideologically driven provision injects needless divisiveness into an otherwise strong, bipartisan bill and punishes hundreds of thousands of young DREAMers who are in the United States through no fault of their own and make tremendous contributions to our communities and the only country they call home.

“I voted against this abhorrent amendment but voted in favor of the Homeland Security Appropriations Act to provide our first responders, law enforcement officials, and border patrol agents with the critical resources they need to keep our communities safe and protect our country from terrorist attacks.

“I am appalled that the King Amendment passed the House, but the fight is far from over. I support the DREAM Act and stand with our DREAMers, and I will aggressively work to remove this divisive provision as the bill moves through the Senate and the conference committee. I implore my colleagues to find reason and work together toward a solution that provides adequate funding for public safety and national security without depriving hundreds of thousands of DREAMers the opportunity to contribute to our economy and serve our country with honor.”
