Salton Sea Sentinel – New Funding for the Salton Sea
Exciting news! We are continuing to make progress at the Salton Sea, working to keep our air clean and valley healthy.
- On June 8th, the U.S. House passed a spending bill supporting the $30 million Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) I helped facilitate between the federal government and the State of California to coordinate management of the Salton Sea. You can read more about this in local news coverage here.
- The House also passed my amendment (Ruiz #36) that allows the federal government to dedicate an additional $2 million to Salton Sea mitigation activities that protect the public’s health. Watch my speech about this amendment and the Salton Sea on the House floor here.
- On June 5th, California voters approved Proposition 68, which I was proud to support and endorse, that included an additional $200 million for Salton Sea mitigation.
With the completion of the Red Hill Bay project later this year, combined with our prior funding for the Salton Sea, we already have almost three quarters of the funding needed to implement the State’s 10-year plan to mitigate the decline of the Salton Sea. I am still impatient and I am still fighting – stay tuned for more updates on the Salton Sea soon!
