Doctors are among the highest-paid professionals in the nation, but what they’re paid to take care of Medicare patients could lead them to shut the door to America’s seniors.

A 2015 Medicare law that doctors argue is contributing to uncertainty and instability in their payments under the program is getting special scrutiny from lawmakers.

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, also known as MACRA, substantially reformed how physicians are compensated under the program in attempts to reward quality of care rather than quantity.

While many middle schoolers spend their summers at the pool, biking around the neighborhood, or playing video games, Jacqueline Aguilar spent most of hers toiling in the lettuce fields of south central Colorado.

“My parents didn’t have enough money to buy new school clothes, and so that’s when I knew I had to go and work in the fields,” she said. Starting at age 11, from 5 am to 2 pm — six, and sometimes seven days a week, at $10 an hour — Aguilar would walk up and down rows of lettuce, weeding and adjusting lettuce heads to make sure they’d grow correctly.

The California Medical Association (CMA) applauds the bipartisan introduction of a bill that would require an annual inflation-based update for Medicare physician payments.

The bill—H.R. 2474, the “Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act”—was introduced by California congressional representatives Raul Ruiz, M.D. (D-CA) and Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) and their Republican partners Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-IN) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D. (R-IA).

New legislation in the House aims to boost physician Medicare payments using an inflation-based update.

United States Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Congressman Raul Ruiz (DCA-25) last week introduced bicameral legislation to create the “César E. Chávez and the Farmworker Movement National Historical Park.”

The bill calls for preserving nationally significant sites associated with labor and civil rights leader César E. Chávez and the farmworker movement in California and Arizona. The legislation is co-sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and U.S. Congressmembers Raul Grijalva (D-AZ-7) and Rueben Gallego (D-AZ-3).

His parents, farmworkers who toiled hard to assure that he and his siblings could have opportunities that they never experienced, inspired him to become someone who helps others.
