Legislation to help families, workers in CA-36.

On Friday, the Coronavirus, Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed the House and became law. This comprehensive legislation provides financial relief for American families, workers, and small businesses during this public health and economic crisis.

Here are just some of the ways the CARES Act will help our community during this time:

  • Direct Monetary Payments – The government will send direct payments of up to $1,200 for individuals, $2,400 for couples, and $500 per child. This will be directly deposited into accounts or sent by check, and will take a minimum of two weeks.
  • Expanded unemployment benefits – This bill improves unemployment benefits by providing an additional $600 per week for the next four months, providing an additional 13 weeks of federally funded benefits, and expanding eligibility to include workers in the gig economy and self-employed workers.
  • Relief for Small businesses – This bill provides more than $375 billion in small business relief, including $349 billion for forgivable loans to small businesses to keep their employees on the payroll. You can read more about this here.
  • Protections for Renters and Homeowners – This bill prohibits foreclosures on all federally-backed mortgages for two months and up to 180 days of forbearance for COVID-19 related hardships.
  • Funding to Fight the Coronavirus – This bill allocates $100 billion for hospitals and providers to purchase testing supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE), expand and train their workers, and build and upgrade facilities.

The comprehensive, bipartisan CARES Act tells health care workers, small business owners, workers, and families in our community that they are not alone and that together, we will get through this.
