Dr. Ruiz Statement on Vote to Ensure People can Maintain Existing Healthcare Coverage

November 15, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Dr. Raul Ruiz (D-Palm Desert) released the following statement on the House vote for H.R. 3350, Keep Your Health Plan Act of 2013.

"As an emergency room doctor, I have always said the Affordable Care Act is a step in the right direction but it will need to be improved as it is implemented to fix it and move forward to provide quality affordable healthcare in my district.

“Over the last few weeks, it's become clear that one of the ways that we need to improve the Affordable Care Act is by making sure that people can keep their existing health care policies if they choose to do so. That's why I voted today for a bipartisan bill that would allow people to maintain their existing healthcare plan.

“Under this legislation, insurance companies would be allowed to continue to offer existing policies, and Americans would be allowed to continue to purchase those policies.

“Many people may find that there are better, less expensive alternatives available through the new exchange system called Covered California. But with this bill, all Californians would be free to choose any options available, including their current policies.

“As we move forward, we must continue working together to improve the Affordable Care Act and make it work for families and businesses in the Coachella Valley and across the country. I stand ready to work with my colleagues to that end."
