Ruiz Fights Rising Medicare Out-of-Pocket Costs for Local Seniors

December 22, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) called for the reversal of monthly increases in out-of-pocket costs for Medicare Part B. Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a nearly $22 monthly increase in Medicare Part B premiums will take effect in 2022. In a letter to CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, Ruiz called for the agency to reverse these harmful price increases that would place an unfair burden on seniors in Southern California and across the country, citing the flawed decision-making model behind the premium increase.

Ruiz's letter reads in part:

"While I understand that health care costs are higher because of the pandemic, they should not be paid for on the backs of our seniors who are on fixed incomes… I urge you to reconsider your decision to increase premiums based on these flawed factors so that seniors don't have to cut corners on things like food or medicine in order to pay for their health insurance."
