Washington: Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., and Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Calif., introduced the Veterans Conservation Corps Act today to connect veterans with employment opportunities in public land maintenance.

Throughout the U.S., veterans who served in the military after 9/11 consistently have a higher unemployment rate than the general population. At the same time, the National Parks Service has a $12 billion backlog in maintenance, which is needed to mitigate wildfires; and protect our national, state, and tribal forests, coastal areas, wildlife refuges, and cemeteries.

Washington, D.C. – Today Representative Raul Ruiz, M.D. (D-CA), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, hailed the House passage of H.R.849, the Protecting Seniors' Access to Medicare Act of 2017. This bill was introduced by Dr. Ruiz and Representative Dr. Phil Roe (R-TN). It passed the House by a vote of 307 to 111.

The Environmental Justice Act of 2017 requires federal agencies to address environmental justice through agency actions and permitting decisions, and strengthens legal protections against environmental injustice for communities of color, underserved communities, and indigenous communities.

Far too many tribal members still do not have access to the health care they need to stay healthy, and far too many tribal communities don't have the resources required to support a robust and comprehensive public health infrastructure. These bills work to address that gap and achieve healthier outcomes for native communities.
